What is SoWa?
The SoWa (South of Washington Street) neighborhood in Boston’s South End is a former mill building district where pianos, canned goods, shoes and other merchandise were made in the 19th century. The district has been home to artists’ studios carved out of the old factories for the last fifty years. Today, the artists have been joined by galleries, cutting edge businesses, world class restaurants and high-end residential lofts.
Every month, the art galleries all over SoWa stage their new 30-day shows featuring the work of emerging and established painters, photographers and sculptors. This event, held on the first Friday evening of each month starting at 5:00pm, is known as First Fridays and has become a popular scene, attracting a wide range of art-enthused fans. The SoWa Artists Guild publishes updated information about First Fridays and other art-based events in the area.
